  • Introduction

As I predicted, Amazon’s new Kindle Fire HDX tablets were a big hit over the holidays, and in my mind is a better tablet than the iPad. Not only is it far cheaper than the iPad – starting at an insanely cheap $ 229 – but they also comes in 7-inch and 8.9-inch varieties and are packed with high-end parts. Unless you’re already invested in the iOS ecosystem, then the Kindle Fire HDX is a tablet worth looking at. And even if you are already an iPhone or iPad user, or own an Android-powered smartphone or tablet, the Kindle Fire HDX makes an awesome second tablet for browsing and content consumption

But a great tablet can be made even better by augmenting it with accessories, and there are some awesome add-ons for Amazon’s flagship tablet.

Note: Some of these accessories are specific for the Kindle Fire HDX while other will work with any tablet or smartphone.

  • Amazon Kindle 9W PowerFast adapter

This is Amazon’s official fast charger for the Kindle tablets. The PowerFast charger pumps out 9W/1.8A of power, and is far beefier than the standard 5W charger.

    Price : $ 19.99.

Instapaper for iOS Now Lets You Send Articles to Your Kindle - The Next Web

If you prefer reading on a Kindle to your iPhone or iPad, today’s Instapaper for iOS app update should suit quite nicely. Provided you have an active Instapaper subscription, you can now send your saved article to a Kindle device from inside the iOS app. Betaworks asks that you register your Kindle email address first with Instapaper, but otherwise it’s smooth sailing.

Version 5.1.5 of the iOS app also introduces Instapaper Daily, which we first spotted on the Web in December last year. The service highlights the most widely read stories on Instapaper and you can now access it from inside the Browse section of the iPhone and iPad app. It’s not as powerful as Pocket’s discovery features, but it’s still an effective way to track important stories.

insta1 Instapaper for iOS now lets you send articles to your Kindle and stream videos via AirPlay

Instapaper for iOS now supports AirPlay streaming too and features new gestures so you can quickly jump back to your saved items after finishing a paginated article. Finally, Betaworks has implemented renewable subscriptions so that premium users no longer have to submit new payments manually. Bliss.

Where to get Kindle books for free - Aol Money

20131030-AP-Amazon.13.JPG AP

Two months on from Christmas, and many recipients of a Kindle e-reader are discovering that e-books can be an expensive habit. While owning a Kindle means having a good read on hand at all times, it’s not so great for the bank balance, with many e-books only a little cheaper than their dead-tree counterparts.

The good news, though, is that it’s possible to find an enormous number of Kindle books without paying a penny. And canny users are cottoning on – indeed, a recent survey by Ofcom and Kantar Media found that in the UK 61 percent of e-books are read for free.

Even better, you don’t even need to own a Kindle device to get these free titles – there are Kindle applications available here to download free for all major smartphones, computers and tablets.

So, once you’re all Kindled up, where are the best places to browse the virtual shelves?

Amazon
The first and most obvious place to look for free books is Amazon itself. However, clicking on the ‘free books’ tab on the right-hand side only brings up a list of the most popular free titles of the day. This link, though, leads to the full list of free books by searching on ‘£ 0 – £ 0′ as a price.

And what a list it is. There are an astonishing 40,157 titles available right now of every type and genre – although there’s a bias towards classics which are out of copyright and self-published novels. It’s worth remembering, though, that the classics are classics for a reason – they’re good.

Books are classified by genre, and some categories are huge: but to avoid having to plough randomly through the list, customers can sort by popularity, date of publication and average customer review score. Around 1,000 new books are added every month. Children’s books are particularly well-represented, with over 1,000 titles from The Ugly Duckling to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, as well as plenty of new books.

Some of these titles are available free indefinitely, others only as a time limited offer – these books can be found in a separate listing here. Most, though, are self-help titles and technical guides.

The Kindle Owners’ Lending Library
Amazon runs its own lending library – but only for users of Amazon Prime. This service, which offers free one-day delivery for more than seven million items from the Amazon store, also gives customers access to more than 350,000 Kindle books for free. Amazon Prime itself is free for the first month and costs £ 49 per year thereafter – soon to go up to £ 79.

Titles include, of course, all the usual out-of-copyright classics – but also many more. The complete list of Harry Potter books is there, for example, along with the Hunger Games trilogy and many others of Amazon’s top sellers. Customers can borrow one book a month and keep it as long as they like – though they’re restricted to one at a time.

Project Gutenberg
The other huge source for free Kindle books is Project Gutenberg, founded as a volunteer project in 1971 to encourage the take-up of electronic books. It now offers nearly 45,000 free books, again with a preponderance of classics.

Right now, the top 100 titles include The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, The Jungle Book and the Kama Sutra, and more than 50 new titles are added every week. Project Gutenberg is still run by volunteers, and donations are welcomed.

DailyFreeBooks
If you’ve already browsed the main free lists from Amazon, Gutenberg et al, you may only be interested in new additions. DailyFreeBooks searches Amazon and US site Smashwords to find new free books as they’re addded, updating its list once an hour. The company also sends out daily emails with a list of the highest-rated books.

British users, though, may find that not all the books listed are free in practice, as the site’s set up using US sources . Special offers can vary by country, and differing copyright laws mean that publishers can’t always release a book in every country.

Your local library
Yup, as long as your library has signed up for Amazon’s OverDrive service and you have a library card, you can borrow Kindle books without even leaving home. Around half of public libraries in the UK are members; check your local library website for more information.

There’s a central catalogue of over a million books, videos and audio books, with individual libraries offering their own selection from this list. Depending on the terms set by the publisher, some books can only be downloaded by one person at a time, whereas others are available for an unlimited number of users simultaneously.

The big problem for OverDrive in the UK, though, is that the document format used isn’t compatible with all Kindle devices. Only the Kindle Fire is supported at the moment, although anyone can access the books on a PC or mobile device using the Kindle software mentioned above.

Happy reading!

How to encrypt your Kindle Fire HDX - CNET

Beyond just using a PIN code lock screen, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX and HDX 8.9-inch tablets can also be secured with device encryption.

Device encryption can be a great way to keep your data secure in case it falls into the wrong hands. For many users, however, it can be overkill and there’s usually a performance hit to a device that’s been encrypted. Using a PIN code to lock the device is usually an effective deterrent and software tools like Find My iPhone and Android Device Manager can help track, lock, or wipe lost devices.

Unfortunately for Kindle Fire HDX owners, there’s no app available that’s comparable to Find My iPhone or Android Device Manager. If you want to be extra cautious with your data or if you’re using a Kindle Fire HDX in an enterprise environment, here’s how to encrypt it:

Step 1 : Make sure you have the latest version of Fire OS installed, then fully charge your Kindle Fire HDX.

Step 2 : With your Kindle Fire HDX plugged in to a wall charger, go to Settings> Security, then select Encryption.

Kindle Fire HDX encryption settings (Credit: Screenshot by Ed Rhee / CNET)

Step 3 : Tap on the “Encrypt tablet” button. If your Fire HDX isn’t fully charged or plugged in, you won’t see this option.

Encrypt Kindle Fire HDX (Credit: Screenshot by Ed Rhee / CNET)

Step 4 : If you have a PIN, you’ll need to enter it, then set an encryption password. This password is different than your lock screen PIN. It will be used only when you boot up the Kindle Fire HDX.

Step 5 : After you’ve entered your encryption password, tap the “Continue” button to begin the encryption process.

Kindle Fire HDX encryption confirmation (Credit: Screenshot by Ed Rhee / CNET)

Your Kindle Fire HDX will reboot, then begin encrypting. Depending on the amount of data stored on your Kindle Fire HDX, the process could take up to an hour to complete, though our test Kindle only took 12 minutes.

Keep in mind that there’s no way to decrypt your Kindle Fire HDX once it’s been encrypted. To remove the encryption, you’ll have to perform a factory reset and erase all your data. Additionally, if the wrong encryption password is entered 30 consecutive times, your Kindle Fire HDX will automatically be reset to factory defaults and your data erased.

The Kindle Fire Is Giving A Big Boost To Amazon's Revenues From Digital Media - Businessinsider India

BII_AmazonDigital

BII

Amazon keeps expanding its reach. Video has been among Amazon’s biggest pushes recently. The company has begun creating original content for Amazon Prime Instant Video, and more recently, rumors are circulating that a streaming device to rival the Apple TV will debut from Amazon in March.

Where does this leave the Kindle Fire amid all this fast-paced media expansion?

The device has been losing market share lately, and looking less relevant to Amazon’s overall strategy.

But according to a report from BI Intelligence, the Kindle Fire is actually a critical component of Amazon’s monetization of its digital media services.

Instead of squeezing a margin from its hardware sales, Amazon generates revenue from Kindle Fire users in other ways. It encourages them to download from Amazon’s vast digital library of apps and media, view ads, and access related services like e-commerce.

In the report, we dig into available data on Amazon’s unique mobile strategy. Amazon has achieved respectable results in terms of app downloads and app revenue on Kindle Fires, and yet is often left out of mobile platform analyses that focus on Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

Access The Full Report And Data By Signing Up For A Free Trial Today >>

Here are some of the key takeaways on the Kindle Fire ecosystem:

  • The Kindle has not managed to achieve real scale globally : The Kindle line, including e-readers, took only a 2% share of global tablet shipments in the third quarter of this year, according to BI Intelligence estimates. That share will bounce back in the fourth quarter, since Kindle sales are strongly influenced by holiday gift-giving. However, due to competition from low-priced Android tablets, Kindle isn’t likely to be more than a slice of the tablet market.
  • But a massive, global consumer base isn’t everything. The Kindle ecosystem will account for 11% of Amazon’s total revenues this year , according to Morgan Stanley, including revenues from digital content streaming and downloading, app purchases, and advertising revenues.
  • Amazon Prime subscriptions are another key source of Amazon revenue , and Kindle Fires encourage subscriptions because subscribers receive free unlimited video streaming and e-book borrowing. Morningstar estimates that there will be more than 10 million total Amazon Prime subscribers this year.
  • The Amazon Appstore is also generating strong revenue results . Popular Kindle Fire apps are generating 59 cents of revenue for every dollar earned by top apps in the Google Play store, according to a Distimo study. Download volumes are about half those on Google Play for top app titles – impressive considering how many more Android devices are in circulation.
  • Amazon’s platform is in a major global expansion phase: Earlier this year, Amazon began selling high-end Kindle Fire models in 170 countries and brought the Amazon Appstore online in 200 countries.
  • Meanwhile, Amazon’s advertising programs on the Kindle Fire also generate nearly $ 200 million in ad revenue for the company, according to projections .

The report is full of charts and data that can be easily downloaded and put to use.

In full, the report:

  • Contextualizes how Kindles stack up in terms of global and US market share
  • Outlines the various revenue sources Amazon has developed around the Kindle Fire line
  • Compares Amazon’s Appstore to the Google Play store in terms of revenue
  • Examines the positive feedback loop between Amazon Kindle Fire usage and Amazon Prime subscriptions
  • Looks at how Amazon is expanding internationally to continue propelling Amazon Kindle Fire uptake and thus creating new opportunities to monetize users

Amazon knocks 20% off all Kindle Fire tablets until 4 March - CNET UK

If you’ve been umming and ahhing over whether to buy a Kindle Fire tablet, this latest Amazon sale could sway you. Until 4 March, the retailer is slashing the price of all its tablets by 20 per cent. It does these kinds of sales quite often, but this is the biggest price cut yet.

That means the Kindle Fire HDX will set you back ? 159.20 instead of the usual ? 199, the HDX 8.9 is ? 263.20 instead of ? 329, the Fire HD is ? 95.20 instead of ? 119, and the Fire HD 8.9 is now ? 127.20 instead of ? 159.

Buy any of the above, and you’ll get a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime, which includes Amazon Prime Instant Video, which launches today. This gives you 15,000 films and TV shows to watch, including Alpha House – the first production by Amazon Studios – which stars John Goodman.

The price of Prime has gone up, which Amazon is less keen to publicise. It’s now ? 79 for a year instead of ? 49 – that price includes the cost of Prime Instant Video. There’s no way to opt out of Amazon’s new movies and TV service. I’ve seen a few people on Twitter saying they’re quitting Prime because of the new high price.

The sale price of the Kindle Fire HDX makes it ? 40 cheaper than Google’s Nexus 7, but as the saying goes, look before you leap. The HDX is a nice piece of kit, but its software is sadly hobbled here in the UK, giving you far fewer features than the competition.

Will you be splashing out on a new tablet in Amazon’s sale? What do you think of it putting up the price of Amazon Prime? Is it a good deal for both services? Or a shameless attempt to push its new streaming offering? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook page.

Amazon Launches Its Kindle Fire HDX Tablets In China - The Next Web

Amazon has launched its Kindle Fire HDX – the latest version of its Kindle tablet – in China, as the company seeks to build on its recent success, which includes topping the Android tablet marketplace.

Amazon finally brought its Kindle devices to China in June last year, after plenty of rumors and repeated delays. This time round, Chinese customers haven’t had to wait that long for the Kindle Fire HDX to land in the country – Amazon announced it only in September last year.

Screen shot 2014 02 25 at PM 03.03.04 Amazons Kindle Fire HDX tablets go on sale in China, priced from $ 278

The tablets, which come in 7 – and 8.9-inch sizes, are being featured prominently on Amazon’s Chinese website now.

The 7-inch tablet Kindle Fire HDX is retailing from CNY1, 699 ($ ??278) while the 8.9-inch one costs upwards of CNY2, 999 ($ ??491). Comparatively, in the US, the 7-inch model starts at $ 229 while the 8.9-inch variant costs upwards of $ 349.

The Kindle Fire HDX tablets run an updated version of Amazon’s Fire operating system and are powered by a 2GHz quad-core processor from Qualcomm. The screen is a beyond-HD display, with a pixel density of 323 ppi for the smaller version and 339 ppi for the 8.9-inch version. The tablets also boast 100 percent sRGB color accuracy and dynamic image contrast.

In addition to being around one-third lighter than their predecessors – Amazon says that at just 374 grams, the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX is the lightest large-screen tablet – the new devices have an ‘all-day’ battery . In real terms, Amazon says that should give up to 11 hours of mixed use and 17 hours of reading time.

Amazon has also introduced the upgraded version of its Kindle Fire HD in China today – which features a faster processor with an HD display and a new lighter and slimmer design, similar to the Kindle Fire HDX. This lower-cost variant retails from CNY1, 099 ($ ??178).

How to Use Kindle MatchBook - LAPTOP Magazine (blog)

matchbook

Kindle Matchbook is a way to bridge the gap between the nostalgia of a physical book and the flexibility of e-books. While few things beat cracking open a good book and turning the page, like many old forms of entertainment, they don’t always make sense in the modern world. Kindle Matchbook is a program that allows Amazon customers who purchased physical books to be given a discount on the e-book version of the same title. The prices range from $ 2.99 to free.

It doesn’t work with all book purchases as only certain publishers and authors have chosen to take part in the program. As it stands, Amazon states on their website that there are “thousands of qualifying books” so it may only be useful in some cases.

A nice perk of Matchbook is that it is retroactive, so if you have purchased books from Amazon since 1999 you may already be eligible for some discounts. It’s easy enough to find out if you’re eligible by searching Amazon’s site. Click on the yellow button labelled “Find your Kindle Matchbook titles”. This will prompt you to sign in to your Amazon Account.

After signing in, you will be told if any of your past purchases are eligible for Kindle Matchbook. From the same page you may also browse all Kindle Matchbook titles by scrolling down and clicking the see more link.

matchbook1 670x393

The link will take you too a page displaying Kindle Matchbook titles and from there you may use the search at the top to see if the book you want qualifies.

matchbook2 670x365

After using the Kindle Matchbook discount to also purchase the e-book version, the title will be tied to your Amazon account and accessible from any device you use read Kindle books. Kindle Matchbook is a nice way to get more value from your book purchases and modernize some of your old library.

Kindle expands into China with new tablets - ecns

Amazon.com Inc launched its high-end Kindle tablets in China on Tuesday in a bid to win over young buyers and compete with Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd in the world’s top mobile electronics market.

“Kindle has accelerated its global expansion since 2012. China is one of the most important links in our strategy,” David Limp, vice-president of Kindle, told China Daily.

The US company launched its first e-reader and tablet products in China in June 2013. But its tablets faced strong competition from Apple’s iPad series, Samsung’s Galaxy series and local vendor Lenovo’s Yoga series.

Limp said he was satisfied with the company’s previous launches in China, but he also admitted that Kindle’s overseas expansion project is still young and the company has a long way to go in China.

Amazon declined to disclose sales figures for Kindle products in China.

“We know our customers’ needs and that will bring us advantages in the future,” said Limp. “Kindles are not just a gadget; it’s a service.”

Amazon has underlined the entertainment functions of its new products, targeting young video game players and music lovers in China. It has joined hands with local video and music distributors such as iQiyi.com to deliver entertainment content.

The Seattle, Washington-based e-commerce giant has also vowed to expand its e-book and application stores in China. About 66,000 books are available on Kindle’s Chinese online store, but only “the most popular” apps are already for download in China.

Amazon pledged to increase investment to lure more channel partners in China, thus increasing market share.

Three new Kindle tablets will go on sale on Wednesday, with prices ranging from 1,500 ($ 245) to 4,000 yuan.

Amazon is the third largest maker of tablets worldwide in terms of market share. In December, it controlled 7.6 percent of global market share, according to IDC, a research firm.

A separate IDC report shows Kindle’s China shipments totaled around 6,300 in the third quarter of 2013, a jump from 2,000 in the previous quarter. The shipments represent less than 1 percent of the nation’s total tablet shipments.

AVG Technologies Releases New Apps for Latest Kindle Devices

AMSTERDAM and SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 24, 2014 / PRNewswire / AVG Technologies N.V. (NYSE: AVG), the online security company for 177 million active users, today announced the availability of three new free apps for the latest Amazon Kindle Fire HDX tablet to make sure users get an improved experience from their devices.

AVG PrivacyFix helps users see at glance their personal privacy settings and make any adjustments in response to changes in the privacy settings of popular social networks like Facebook and Google. Device performance improvement apps AVG Uninstaller and AVG Battery Saver & TuneUp guide users on the apps that are rarely used and provide help to remove them, boost battery life, and keep track of data and storage usage. All apps are free to download from the Amazon Appstore.

“AVG has been expanding its range of Android security, privacy and performance offerings in the last few years as the number of Android-based devices on the market has increased exponentially. We are delighted to have the opportunity to create authentic apps that are tailored to specific devices like Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX, “said Omri Sigelman, VP of Marketing and Sales, AVG Technologies. “Ultimately, our goal is to deliver a great experience for Amazon users that supports and enhances their everyday online activities.”

AVG PrivacyFix
In the ever-changing world of social sites, AVG PrivacyFix helps users navigate the online privacy settings of their favorite social networks such as Facebook, Google or LinkedIn. It provides users with an instant view of their social profile status, flags potential concerns and proposes easy-to-understand fixes from one single dashboard. These could include, for example, preventing friends’ apps from accessing their personal data, getting rid of old apps no longer used, and helping control personal information shared on social sites. It also helps users select to opt out of targeted advertising on the sites they visit.

AVG Uninstaller
AVG Uninstaller monitors apps that have been downloaded onto Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX tablet to assess the frequency of their use, size, battery usage and data usage. Based on this, it suggests to users which ones could be removed and helps to uninstall those selected for deletion in an easy step. The monitoring feature also notifies users regularly when apps haven’t been used in a while and alerts them of possible performance hogs. This helps to improve performance and battery life from the Kindle Fire HDX device.

How to Borrow Books on a Kindle Fire HDX - LAPTOP Magazine (blog)

booklibrary2 620x400

Libraries may fast become a thing of the past, but just because you can’t find your library card it doesn’t mean you still wouldn’t mind checking out a book every once in a while. With the ability to borrow books from Amazon, that trashy romance novel or young adult fiction you’ve always wanted to read but can’t bring yourself to buy can still be yours.

To borrow books from the Kindle Bookstore, you must first be a subscriber to Amazon Prime. It costs $ 79 a year, but it nets you lots of great services including free 2-day shipping, Amazon Instant Video access and the ability to borrow from more than 500,000 Kindle books. You can keep the book without penalty until you’re finished and a new book can be borrowed every month, though only one can be borrowed at a time.

If you are an Amazon Prime member, borrowing books for your Kindle Fire HDX is a cinch.

1. Tap Books from the home screen. Then enter the Bookstore.

5. Tap on the book you want and to the right side you will see an option to borrow for free.

After the book is downloaded, you will be free to read away without ever having to worry about late fees or sour looks from the Librarian. As a helpful tip, it may be easier to search on your desktop or laptop using the Amazon website by searching for “Prime Eligible Kindle Ebooks” under the books search. Though you may only borrow books from the store on your Kindle Fire HDX it’s quicker and easier to search with a keyboard and mouse. Happy hunting.
