You might miss the feeling of a real book, turning its pages and its smell. But surely this new front-lit e-reader will overshadow all your fascination about real books.
Its special features such as the ability to carry and read multiple books at any given time, getting back to the place where you left reading without bookmarking, taking notes or doing Wikipedia are just mindblowing.
The Kindle Paperwhite is a small rectangular device that feels light and convenient to hold. It has got a 6-inch display with neat sides, a micro USB port and a power key at the bottom.
My review unit was accompanied with a textured flip cover. The cover adds some weight to the Kindle but it does protect it from falls and dust. It makes the Kindle feel like a compact sleek diary.
The way we configure Google account on other Android devices, Paperwhite asks for your Amazon account. As I had one, I logged in. Instantly, all my previous purchases appeared on the device under ‘Cloud’ option. By simply touching the book, it started downloading and later it appeared under ‘On Device’ tab.
Although, the experience of reading physical books is altogether different, I got used to the Kindle in a few days. The biggest advantage of an e-book reader is that I can carry over a hundred books with me. I was able to read multiple books at a time, without worrying about bookmarking. Whenever I switched between books, they opened from the same page where I left them reading. This is certainly a handy feature.
A simple touch on the top of the display comes up with various options – home, brightness adjustment, Kindle Store, search, goodreads, font size, go to, share, etc. Tapping at the bottom of the page will take you to the next page. While reading books, I was able to highlight words, select text, search meanings in the dictionary and also check Wikipedia for brief history.
Amazon claims that this new reader is 25 per cent faster than its predecessor. While it did seem fast, rarely though there was a lag in flipping pages. Amazon has replaced the traditional e-ink display with the Carta e-ink display, where the whites now look purer and the blacks are deeper. This helps you reading in low light. One can continue to read on the Paperwhite under sunlight and the text appears crisp, all the time.
However, with graphic books becoming really popular, the e-book reader isn’t meant for colour graphics or viewing images. It doesn’t support colours and so such books appear boring on this device. Amazon has also added an experimental browser that can be used for browsing the web. There is also a vocabulary builder onboard.
Unlike today’s power hogging devices, the Paperwhite has a trustworthy battery that lasts for over a week with a couple of hours of reading, everyday.
The Kindle Paperwhite is available in two variants – Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi with 3G. The benefit of owning the latter is the ability to download books, anytime, anywhere. For this, Kindle isn’t charging any monthly fee but has overall priced it Rs 3,000 higher than the Wi-Fi version.
