Android tablet deathmatch: Amazon Kindle Fire HDX versus the Samsung ... - ITworld.com

Two of the hottest-selling Android tablets are the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. When it comes to getting work done, which is best?

Screen

When it comes to tablet screens, size does matter. And so the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is the better of the two for productivity. It sports an eight-inch screen, compared to the Kindle Fire’s seven-incher. If you’re working on a document or spreadsheet, every inch matters, and the larger screen can make a big difference. On the other hand, the Kindle Fire’s screen offers better resolution: 1920 by 1200 pixels, at 323 pixels per inch, compared to the Galaxy Tab’s 1280 by 800 pixelsat 189 pixels per inch.

Be aware, though, that there’s also a seven-inch version of the Galaxy Tab, a 10-inch version of the Galaxy Tab, as well as 8.9-inch version of the Kindle Fire HDX. So if you want an even larger screen (or smaller screen), take your pick.

Storage

The Samsung Galaxy Tab bests the Kindle Fire HDX, largely because it has a microSD slot, something the Kindle lacks. Without the external storage, the Kindle Fire HDX would be a winner, because it comes with either 16, 32, or 64GB, whichever you want to pay for. The Galaxy Tab comes with 16 GB of storage, and you can add up to 64 GB more with a microSD card. So the Galaxy Tab offers more total storage.

Apps

Here the Galaxy Tab comes out the clear winner, because it uses Google Play for getting apps. The Kindle Fire HDX can’t access the Google Play app store, and instead forces you to use the Amazon App Store. That has fewer apps than does Google Play. In addition, apps tend to be updated not as quickly on the Amazon App Store as on Google Play.

Processor

The Kindle Fire HDX wins: Its processor is a Qualcomm Snapdrago quad-core 2.2 GHz chip, versus the decidedly more pokey 1.5GHz dual core chip in the Galaxy Tab.

Price

There’s no direct relationship between price and productivity, but if you’re worried about your wallet, this is something to take into account. The Kindle Fire HDX is listed at $ 229, but you can get it these days for $ 199. The Galaxy Tab is listed at $ 299, but you can typically get it for $ 249. That means you’ll be paying $ 50 more the Galaxy Tab.

Bottom Line

For productivity, the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is a slightly better bet than the Kindle Fire HDX. It’s got a larger screen, more potential total storage, and access to more apps. On the other hand, the Kindle Fire HDX has a more powerful processor, and costs $ 50 less. And if it’s entertainment you’re after, the Kindle Fire HDX is a clear winner because of Amazon’s superior entertainment ecosystem.
