Amazon Kindle Store Opens for Mexico - TechnoBuffalo

By Todd Haselton | August 29, 2013

kindle-paperwhite-review-005

Amazon on Thursday announced that it has officially opened up its Kindle Store in Mexico. The store is home to 2 million eBooks, 70,000 of which are in Spanish, and Amazon will sell the titles in Mexican Pesos.

The news is particularly noteworthy because of a lack of brick and mortar bookstores in a majority of Mexico, Amazon’s director of Kindle content Pedro Huerta explained. Without a bookstore or a library nearby, the Kindle could be an important learning tool – particularly for children. So, with a viable Internet connection, the population can get online and reading. Amazon will also sell the Kindle and the Kindle Paperwhite through its store, for MXN $ 1,399 ($ ??105) and MXN $ 2,399 ($ ??180).

Amazon’s Kindle Store for Mexico is also home to books by famous Mexican authors, and will sell more than 1,000 titles for less than MXN $ 9 ($ 0.68)

CyanogenMod 10.2 arrives for the Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire - Android Community

Custom third-party ROMs provide a good way to keep older hardware running current versions of Android. And in this case the aging hardware we are talking about is the Nook Tablet and the original Kindle Fire. These were both originally released with a customized version of Android 2.3, however thanks to CyanogenMod they can be running Android 4.3.

hero-540x425

In both cases the ROM you would need to look for is CyanogenMod 10.2. Builds for both of these tablets can be found by way of the xda-developers forums (Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire) and both can be paired up with an Android 4.3 build of Gapps, which is what you will need to get all the Google apps such as the Play Store.

Similar to installing CyanogenMod on any other tablet or smartphone, there is a bit of work to do in order to get up and running. This process isn’t necessarily hard to do, but it should be done with caution as things can go wrong if you make some mistakes. While the process will vary from device to device, the basics is that you will need to root the tablet, install a custom recovery and then flash the ROM (followed by Gapps).

Of course, those who have already rooted their tablet and installed a custom recovery will have it a bit easier. Looking back and we have seen other CyanogenMod builds for these two tablets. For example, a build of CM10.1 (Android 4.2) came available for the Nook Tablet back in December of last year. The upgrade from CM10.1 to 10.2 may not be as big, but those going from the stock setup to CM10.2 will see more than a handful of changes.

That all being said, aside from the warning about making sure you proceed with caution in terms of updating these devices – it should also be said that CM10.2 is still under development and these builds are both based off the nightlies. Or in other words, those updating to CM10.2 may experience some bugs or other issues.

  • CyanogenMod Account launched to bring security and privacy features
  • CyanogenMod cLock widget released for all Android 4.2 devices
  • CyanogenMod Power Widgets to be replaced by a “Quick Access Ribbon”
  • CyanogenMod 10.1.3 RC1 released, prepares to bid farewell to CM 10.1

Amazon.com Hopes Newest Kindle Fire Will Lift Popularity AMZN AAPL - Investor's Business Daily

Observers expect Amazon.com (AMZN) to unveil its latest Kindle Fire tablets in September, with one big hint being a recent price cut on its existing Kindle Fire HD tablet.

Two recent surveys found Amazon’s tablet losing share, with Samsung now clearly the top challenger to No. 1 Apple (AAPL).

GVA Research’s David Garrity says Amazon feels pressure to upgrade its Kindle Fire because Apple is expected to release its newest iPads soon. While Apple is widely expected to release its newest iPhones on Sept. 10, Garrity says new iPad releases that day are also very possible.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the Kindle Fire HD a year ago, but this year's plans are still not known.

“If Amazon doesn’t have something out between now and the time Apple releases a new version of the iPad, look for further weakness where the Kindle is concerned,” Garrity said. “What has been sluggishness will turn into a substantial decline.”

Not Among Top 5

On Aug. 5, market tracker IDC said global shipments of Amazon’s Kindle Fire slipped during the second quarter.

For the first time since the Fire’s launch in late 2011, it didn’t make IDC’s top five worldwide tablet vendors.

Apple’s iPad remained No. 1, said IDC, followed in order by Samsung, Asus, Lenovo and Acer. Amazon was No. 6.

During 2012′s holiday shopping season, IDC says Amazon was No. 3 in tablet shipments, behind Apple and Samsung.

But S & P Capital IQ equity analyst Michael Souers said it was already obvious that “Kindle Fire has certainly lost some share.”

Souers says Amazon has pulled back on its advertising for the Fire, even as some rivals have stepped up their advertising.

Jumptap, a mobile platform provider, found in a poll released Aug. 22 that Kindle Fire’s US tablet market share in July, based on mobile traffic, had fallen to 10.1% from 21.5% in July 2012. Jumptap’s results are based on data from its platform of more than 218 million US mobile users.

Market share for Samsung’s Galaxy Tablet, by comparison, had jumped to 11.1% from 5.3%. Jumptap says Samsung replaced Amazon in the No. 2 spot, behind Apple. Amazon fell to No. 3.

The survey found Apple’s share rose to a 70.1% share from 67%.

“Kindle’s market share is sputtering, and this is something that Amazon should definitely take notice of,” said Matt Duffy, marketing vice president at Jumptap.

Duffy says Apple’s iPad Mini has taken a bite out of Kindle’s popularity.

Amazon has been benefiting from the declining sales of Barnes & Noble ‘s (BKS) Nook e-reader. But Google (GOOG), a relatively recent entrant in tablets, is coming up fast. Google’s Nexus 7 tablet saw a 2.3 percentage point gain in July, says Jumptap, making it No. 4 in its survey.

Amazon Increases Kindle Refunds in Legal Settlement - Wall Street Journal (blog)

By Jeffrey A. Trachtenberg

Agence France-Presse/Getty Images
Amazon’s Kindle reader.

Amazon.com Inc. on Friday raised the estimate of the refunds that its Kindle customers are expected to receive as a result of legal settlements between book publishers and various state attorneys general.

In a posting on its web site, Amazon said that its e-book customers would receive an estimated $ 0.73 to $ 3.82 for certain Kindle titles they purchased between April 1 2010 and May 21, 2012.

Amazon notified digital book buyers last fall about the likelihood of some refunds, stemming from antitrust settlements. At that time, however, only three publishers had settled allegations of e-book price fixing. The amounts Amazon cited then were somewhat lower. Since then, another two publishers have settled.

The final settlements still needs court approval; Amazon said approval could come in December. Amazon said it will notify its customers when the credits are applied, which will happen automatically.

The settlements will return a total of more than $ 165 million to consumers, including those who shopped at outlets other than Amazon.

The settling publishers include HarperCollins Publishers, which like the Wall Street Journal, is owned by News Corp.

Amazon launches Mexico Kindle store - The Bookseller

30.08.13 | Lisa Campbell

Amazon has launched the Kindle store in Mexico with over 70,000 Spanish language e-books.

The e-commerce retailer has partnered with Mexican chain store Gandi to sell the basic Kindle and the front lit Kindle Paperwhite. The e-readers will only be sold through those stores and not online through the Amazon Mexico site as yet.

Amazon has also opened a Kindle Direct (self) Publishing platform in the country as part of the launch.

Pedro Huerta, director of Kindle content for Latin America, said: “The vast majority of Mexicans do not have access to a bookstore in their town, so we’re happy to launch the Mexico Kindle Store today and bring a huge bookstore … to anyone with an internet connection. “

Some of the e-books in the store are in Mexican indigenous languages ??like Nahuatl. Amazon is offering Mexican customers over 1,000 e-books for MXN $ 9 or less (44p) as a starting offer.

The basic Kindle will retail for MXN $ 1,399 (£ 67) and the Kindle Paperwhite for MXN $ 2,399 (USD $ 116).

Alberto Achar, Marketing Manager at Gandhi, said: “We are confident it will have very good acceptance by readers.”

Amazon's Kindle Store Heads South ... in a Good Way - Motley Fool

In two separate press releases Thursday morning, Amazon.com ( NASDAQ: AMZN ) announced the official launch of both its Mexico Kindle store as well as Kindle Direct Publishing for Mexican authors and publishers.

The new Mexico Kindle store, for its part, starts with the broadest available selection of the most popular books in the country, including the most Spanish-language bestsellers, more than 70,000 total Spanish titles, 1,500 free Spanish titles, and 1,000 with special pricing starting at just 9 Mexican pesos, or roughly $ 0.68.

What’s more, according to the release, the new store also includes “hundreds of thousands of exclusive titles, including works from authors like Jose Emilio Pacheco, Elena Poniatowska, Sergio Pitol and Carlos Monsivais, as well as comic books from Mafalda and Familia Burrón. “

Here’s why this is a great move
According to Pedro Huerta, Amazon’s director of Kindle Content in Latin America, “The vast majority of Mexicans do not have access to a bookstore in their town, so we’re happy to launch the Mexico Kindle Store today and bring a huge bookstore with over 2 million titles to anyone with an Internet connection. “

Of course, it’s important to note this once again pits Amazon’s efforts directly against Apple ‘s ( NASDAQ: AAPL ) iBookstore in the region, which launched across much of Latin America last October. However, you can bet the folks at Amazon couldn’t wait to point out the fact the new Kindle Store has more digital Spanish titles than any other platform, which should help it gain some ground given Apple’s nearly year-long head start.

In addition, Amazon is continuing its push to outsell Apple’s iPad devices by introducing the Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite devices at brick-and-mortar Gandhi stores – think the Mexican version of Barnes & Noble – which currently has a total of 38 locations, including 12 in Mexico city, 15 in the interior of the republic, and 11 in Palacio de Hierro, an upscale chain of department stores in the country.

Gandhi store in Cancun, Mexico. Image source: Gandhi.

For authors, the new Mexico Kindle Direct Publishing platform simply extends Amazon’s existing self-service publishing platform (which I’ve previously written about here), allowing authors to earn 35% royalties on their books, or 70% if they choose to enroll in KDP Select, an option with which they can make their book exclusive to Kindle and also have it included in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library on Amazon’s broader scope of global websites. In this case, the authors can earn money each time their book is borrowed through the KDP Select program.

And the platform certainly isn’t just for aspiring writers, either. Best-selling Mexican author Paulo Coelho, for example, is already offering his books on the Mexico Kindle store through Kindle Direct Publishing, including El Alquimista and Once Minutos .

In the end, like Amazon’s existing Kindle Store and Direct Publishing platforms, the new Mexico-centric offering is not only a win for readers, authors, and publishers but also for Amazon as yet another low-overhead way to cash in on the ever-increasing role of digital media as consumers’ platform of choice.

New Kindle Fire HD Release Hinted by Price Drop, Amazon 7 "Tablet Now $ 159 ... - International Business Times AU

Kindle Fire HD 7 “may attract more cheap Android tablet shoppers now that Amazon has dropped its 16GB price tag from $ 199 to $ 159.

Australia’s online store MobiCity offers the Kindle Fire HD 7 “32GB for AU $ 319.95. Reviews are generally positive for this cheap tablet alternative. It is not as popular as the Android tabs of Samsung, for instance the Galaxy Tab series. But the Kindle series has its own market share.

Google Nexus 7 2 nd generation recently received a very warm welcome from critics. The highly anticipated Apple iPad mini 2 is expected soon. But the Kindle Fire HD remains the best tablet for some of the heaviest media consumers.

Amazon makes it easy for Kindle Fire users to browse its massive catalogue and enjoy endless media through its own device. Magazine and eBook readers, as well as TV and film addicts, can easily take care of their fix with a Kindle in their hands.

The Kindle Fire HD 7 “runs on Android Jelly Bean. It features a screen display with 1280×800 pixels. The display comes with anti-glare technology that secures image or video quality from any viewing angle. The tab is fuelled by a 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM.

Kindle Fire HD vs Nexus 7 2 nd Generation

Some cheap Android tablets are wondering whether they should get the Kindle Fire HD 7 “or the Nexus 7 2 nd generation. But the choice usually depends on different factors. The Kindle price drop is sure to attract many buyers, but others might care more for tab specs and features.

If the screen display, rear camera and cellular connectivity are big considerations, the Nexus 7 2 is the better tablet. Its screen boasts of 1920 x 1200 pixels, and mobile photo enthusiasts can enjoy a 5 MP rear camera. In contrast, the Kindle Fire HD lacks a shooter. The Amazon tablet also lacks the other connectivity features supported by the Nexus device: GPRS, EDGE, HSPA +, LTE, GSM.

Users can enjoy up to 11 hours of reading, web browsing (Wi-Fi), and watching (music / film) video on their Kindle Fire HD. (Other reviews point out a 7-hr battery life.) Among others, Amazon is mighty proud of the tab’s “dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi (MIMO) for faster streaming and fewer dropped connections than standard Wi-Fi. “

Kindle Paperwhite-World’s Most Advanced E-Reader-Available Starting Today at Gandhi Stores

Reviews of Kindle Paperwhite are overwhelmingly positive and reinforce that Kindle Paperwhite is the best e-reader in the world:

“So, do all of these features add up to the best e-reader out there? In a syllable: yep. Amazon was clearly focused on creating the best possible reading experience with the Paperwhite, and it’s delivered.” – Engadget
“Forget Everything Else, This Is the E-Reader You Want.” – Gizmodo

“Amazon has brightened the picture for readers with Kindle Paperwhite – quite literally and in more ways than one.” – USA Today

“The Scree n Makes It the Best E-Reader Yet” – Time

Advanced E-Reader Display

Kindle Paperwhite’s display features a 212 ppi display that makes text in books crisp and clear at any size. Images are sharp, rich and show great detail.

Innovative Built-In Light

Backlit LCD displays direct light up through the display into the user’s eyes. Kindle Paperwhite’s innovative front-lit display guides light underneath an anti-glare layer and down toward the display, away from the reader’s eyes. This means a reader can read for hours with less eye fatigue and strain. The screen brightness is easily adjusted for reading in any light. The Paperwhite display provides an incredible experience in the dark and in direct sunlight.

Breakthrough Battery Life

Kindle Paperwhite’s built-in front light is designed to be used at all times-both in daylight and in a dark room-for the clearest, crispest reading experience. In order to use the light at all times, Kindle Paperwhite sustains the battery life that customers love about Kindle. Amazon’s light guide technology precisely diffuses the light across the screen and only requires four LEDs to light the entire screen (unlike LCD screens which can use up to 50 LEDs). The light guide is so efficient that Kindle Paperwhite has a remarkable 8 weeks of battery life, even with the light on at all times.

Free 3G

Kindle’s free 3G connection means customers never have to hunt for or pay for a Wi-Fi hotspot-they simply download and read books anytime, anywhere. Amazon pays for the 3G connection on Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G, so customers pay no monthly fees and sign no annual contracts.

Built-In Wi-Fi

Kindle Paperwhite comes with built-in Wi-Fi, letting readers discover new content at home or on the road anywhere you can access Wi-Fi.

Books in 60 Seconds

Find a book and start reading in seconds with our fast, free wireless delivery. No computer required to download content.

New Touch Technology

Kindle Paperwhite’s new capacitive touch technology is uniquely integrated into the Paperwhite display, allowing for a thinner form factor for Kindle Paperwhite and even better touch accuracy.

Slim and Sleek Design

At just over a third of an inch thin and weighing 213 grams, Kindle Paperwhite is thinner than a magazine and weighs less than a typical paperback.

Hand-Tuned Fonts

Every font on Kindle Paperwhite is hand-tuned for maximum readability. The Amazon typography team worked at the pixel level to ensure consistency of stroke thickness and shape profiles across all individual glyphs, aligning each size to the specific grid of the new Paperwhite display. This allows for unprecedented sharpness of fonts. Kindle Paperwhite’s high resolution display also allows for elegant typeface options, such as Baskerville and Palatino, which use thin stems that would not render well on a lower resolution display.

Time to Read

Time to Read helps readers know the amount of time it will take them to finish a chapter or a book. This feature is smart-it personalizes the time for each customer based on their reading speed and is constantly updated as the reader’s speed and habits change. With Time to Read, it’s never been easier to decide when to start a new chapter or finish the chapter you’re reading.

Features Built Just for Readers

Each Kindle offers a variety of font styles and sizes, so customers can easily customize their reading experience. Kindle Paperwhite also comes with built-in dictionaries for instant lookup of words, Real Page Numbers, support for bookmarks and annotations, and more.

Worry-Free Cloud Storage

Customers’ Kindle books are automatically backed up in the cloud, so they can re-download their books wirelessly for free.

Sharing

Customers can share highlighted sections, notes and meaningful quotes on Facebook and Twitter directly from Kindle without leaving the book.

Parental Controls

Parental Controls allow parents to restrict access to the Kindle Store, Cloud Archive and the Experimental Web Browser so they can give their Kindle to a child worry-free.

Top-Rated, World-Class Customer Service

Whenever customers shop on Amazon, buy a Kindle, or buy Kindle content, they know that they are also getting Amazon’s world-class customer service. Customers have been shopping on Amazon.com for over 15 years, and they continue to do so because of the unparalleled, end-to-end customer experience.

Beautiful Leather Covers with Auto Wake and Sleep

Covers for Kindle Paperwhite feature a premium textured leather exterior and a subtle woven nylon interior to provide the lightest and thinnest form of protection. The integrated magnetic clasp ensures the cover remains securely closed while in a backpack, purse, or briefcase. The cover automatically wakes Kindle Paperwhite upon opening and puts it to sleep when closed, making it easy to dive right back into the book.

Amazon launches Kindle, Kindle Store and self-publishing platform in Mexico - GigaOM

2 hours ago Aug. 29, 2013 – 6:35 AM PDT

Kindle is now available in Mexico: On Thursday, Amazon launched the Mexican Kindle Store. It’s also selling the basic Kindle and front-lit Kindle Paperwhite through Mexican chain store Gandhi. And it opened its digital self-publishing platform, Kindle Direct Publishing, up to Mexicans.

“The vast majority of Mexicans do not have access to a bookstore in their town, so we’re happy to launch the Mexico Kindle Store today and bring a huge bookstore with over 2 million titles to anyone with an Internet connection,” Pedro Huerta, director of Kindle Content for Latin America, said in a statement.

The Mexican Kindle Store includes over 70,000 Spanish-language ebooks, including some in Mexican indigenous languages ??like Nahuatl. As an introductory offer, Amazon is selling over 1,000 ebooks for MXN $ 9 or less (USD $ 0.68).

The Kindle e-readers are only available at Gandhi stores now, not through Amazon’s website. The basic Kindle will retail for MXN $ 1,399 (USD $ 105) and the Kindle Paperwhite for MXN $ 2,399 (USD $ 180).

I haven’t been able to track down concrete statistics on e-reading in Mexico, but ebook market share there is small: In 2012, only about a quarter of households had an internet connection, though eMarketer estimated that 44.5 percent of Mexicans would be online in some way by 2013. That rate of internet penetration is lower than the rest of Latin America, and it’s why e-reading companies like Amazon have often concentrated on other Latin American countries first. The Kindle Brazil store, for example, opened last year.

Add Weather and Google Calendar Information to Your Kindle - LifeHacker India

Add Weather and Google Calendar Information to Your Kindle

The Kindle’s screensaver is pretty, but useless. If you want to spice it up with relevant information, including weather, time, and more, programmer Pablo Mateo shows you how to do it.

The hack is based on a weather station hack we’ve seen before, but makes it so the Kindle remains functional as an ereader still. This hack changes the wallpaper to an image that includes the weather, date, and your Google Calendar information. It takes a bit of work to set up a server and jailbreak the Kindle, but the end result is a far more useful screensaver than just an image. Head over to GitHub for the full setup guide and all the files you’ll need.

How to turn your Kindle Fire HD into the ultimate Roku box - CNET

With the right apps and a special cable, your tablet can actually outperform a Roku. Here’s how to set everything up.

Rick Broida August 27, 2013 12:59 PM PDT
A generous library of streaming-media apps allows a Kindle Fire HD to give a Roku box a run for the money.

When you bought your Kindle Fire HD tablet, you didn’t know you were getting a Roku box as part of the transaction. After a fashion, anyway.

See, like a lot of Android-powered tablets, the Fire HD allows for mirroring to your TV. In other words, what you see on the small screen gets duplicated on the big one. That actually gives the Fire a big advantage over a Roku, as it allows for a lot more viewing material – not just apps like Hulu and Netflix, but also browser-based content, YouTube videos, and even games. Let’s take a look at how you can get your tablet connected to your TV for Roku duty.

First up, you’ll need an HDMI cable. This is the only real downside, as no one wants a cable snaking across their floor, but for the moment there’s no wireless way to connect your Kindle Fire HD to your TV – not without some kind of box connected to the latter, which effectively defeats the whole purpose.

Make sure you buy the right kind of cable to connect your Kindle to your TV: Micro-HDMI to HDMI.

(Credit: Amazon)

The cable you want should have an HDMI connector at one end (for plugging into your TV) and a Micro-HDMI connector at the other (for plugging into your Kindle, natch). If you want to be able to kick back on the couch without having to hop up every time you need to pause, skip, or change apps, consider a 15-foot cable. At this writing, Amazon offers a BlueRigger 15-foot Micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable for $ 9.99 (with free shipping for Amazon Prime subscribers).

Once you have the cable, connect it as described above, then switch your TV to the appropriate HDMI input. In just a few seconds you should see your Kindle Fire’s interface mirrored on the big screen.

Now it’s time to stock up on apps. Some good candidates include ABC, Crackle, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, Netflix, and US TV and Radio Free, this last allowing you to stream live TV channels (and doing a pretty darn good job of it).

Of course, you can also tap Amazon Instant Video for on-demand movies and TV shows, as well as Prime if you’re a subscriber. And if you want YouTube, a “channel” that still isn’t available via Roku, just fire it up in the Kindle’s browser.

Speaking of which, the browser looks mighty nice blown up big. And you can use a Flash-enabled third-party browser like Dolphin to stream TV shows from the various networks’ sites: AMC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and so on. (Silk works with some of them, but Dolphin is more consistent.) And don’t forget big-screen Skype.

Once you’ve started enjoying the Roku-style goodness, be sure to crank down the brightness on your Fire to help extend its battery life. (Even better, if you don’t mind another cord, just keep it plugged into a wall outlet.)

Kobo flattens Aura e-reader to help challenge Kindle - BBC News

27 August 2013 Last updated at 19:18 ET

Kobo Aura The front of the new Kobo is flat in the style of a tablet computer

Kobo has updated its e-reader line-up, including its first e-ink device to have a “totally flat” front.

The new Aura’s edge-to-edge display is designed to help it stand out from rivals which typically feature a receded screen within a frame.

The device is being priced at a premium to Amazon’s competing Kindle Paperwhite and Barnes & Noble’s Nook Simple Touch.

Analysts have said the dedicated e-reader market is shrinking faster than predicted due to falling tablet prices.

Kobo does have a range of Android-powered multimedia tablets, which have also been revamped to take advantage of faster processors.

But the firm told the BBC that its e-ink devices still accounted for between 80% to 90% of all the machines it sold, indicating that the Aura will play a crucial role in attracting consumers to its ebook store.

Capacitive touchscreen

The global market in dedicated e-readers peaked in 2011 with 23 million devices sold, according to the research consultancy Gartner.

The firm said sales have since declined to the point that only 16 million such machines are forecast to be bought this year, with the number expected to fall to 10 million in 2017.

E-ink screens are easier to read in sunlight and are less likely to cause eyestrain than the LCD displays commonly used in tablets, but Gartner said that many consumers are unwilling to buy both devices.

“It is not that consumers have lost interest in e-books – rather, consumers have chosen instead to read e-books on other devices,” Gartner analyst Hugues De La Vergne wrote in a report on the sector.

Kobo Arc 10HD Kobo also has a new 10in (25.4cm) Android tablet which can be used to read magazines

“Tablets can perform many functions, including supporting e-reader applications. Although many avid readers will still prefer a standalone reading device, most people will see no justification for the additional expense of buying a dedicated e-reader, unless it’s significantly less costly than a tablet. “

Kobo has made the latest Aura cheaper than its previous version, which was £ 140. It is now the same price as Sony’s PRS-T2 Reader, but £ 11 more than Amazon’s bestselling Kindle Paperwhite and £ 51 more than the equivalent Nook.

For the price, Kobo is promising “the most even front-light” of any such device, addressing criticism that other machines make parts of their screen brighter than other areas when viewed in a dark room.

It has also teamed up with the service Pocket to make it easy to save articles from the web so that they can be synched and read on the Aura later.

In addition the firm has switched to using a capacitive touchscreen. This takes advantage of the way a user’s fingers disrupt an electrical field to provide more accurate feedback than the infrared tech used in Kobo’s Glow e-readers.

“It gives the ability to pinch-and-zoom when you want to zoom in on a particular piece of text or image,” the firm’s general manager of devices Wayne White told the BBC.

The Kindle Paperwhite introduced the same technology last year.

Even so, one industry expert said the fact that the new Aura is lighter than its rival while offering a microSD card slot – which the Kindle lacks – should help it appeal to a niche audience.

Kindle Paperwhite Analysts say the Kindle Paperwhite is the UK’s bestselling dedicated e-reader

“Amazon has something like 90% of the e-reader market in the UK, but having said that, Kobo’s influence is growing,” explained Lisa Campbell from the Bookseller, a trade magazine.

“Publishers report that digital sales on Kobo are rising and the firm is making in-roads into Amazon’s marketshare.

“By offering the Aura in two colours [black and pink], putting contours on the back and offering higher specs the the firm is now trying to target the ‘heavy’ book-readers market while Amazon goes after the mass market. “

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) – The tech world is buzzing with big headlines these days – from the release date for the new iPhone to dropping prices for the Kindle Fire. Tech Tuesday’s David Powell breaks it all down in this week’s segment.

The following is David Powell’s discussion of these topics:

Tech Tuesday: Top Stories
There is lots of news in the world of tech this week, let’s look at the Top Stories in Tech.

* Ballmer to Step Down. The CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, announced on Friday that he will retire within the next 12 months, once a suitable successor is found. Microsoft has struggled in the years since Bill Gates stepped down as they have been beaten and bruised by Apple and Google. They have had some key wins in the past few months as the Xbox One has positive reviews and the Surface continues to gain traction, but the embattled CEO needs to move on for MSFT to move ahead. Two interesting notes, the stock surged 7% on Friday after the announcement, which raised the value of his stock by $ 769 million. So, he made more than $ 700m just by quitting! Also, we shouldn’t feel too sorry for Steve, his stock is worth upwards of $ 10 billion. Although, the value of Microsoft when he took over was $ 600b and is now less than $ 300b. Ouch.
* IPhone potential release date-the internet blew up last week over reports that the next iPhone is set to unveil on Sept ember 10th. Two other big pieces of news is that it is rumored that it will be available in white, black and GOLD! Yes. Gold. Reports say that it won’t be a tacky gold, but more of an understated gold. This is expected to be a nod to the Chinese market where a gold phone would be expected to be in high demand. The other news is that there is a rumored 5C, which would be a lower cost iPhone. The new iPhone is supposed to have a stronger battery, more powerful processor and potentially fingerprint technology.
* Kindle Fire prices dropping-if you’ve ever thought about picking up a Kindle Fire tablet, now may be the time. Their 7 inch tablet is now down to $ 159. Normally, this is a $ 200 device. There are rumors that pricing may drop again later this year when a new model comes out. The interesting thing about the Kindle Fire is that it is, essentially, a nice device to separate you from your money. It makes it very easy to spend a fortune downloading movies , books and ordering stuff from Amazon. With it’s “one click” ordering, it is one of the easiest online shopping experiences out there and the Kindle Fire makes it easier. Some industry analysts say that Amazon is so efficient that they could even give away the Kindle Fire and still make money on all the stuff you would buy on it! Pretty amazing. But, they aren’t giving them away, however, around $ 150 is a great, great price for a very nice tablet.
