Amazon Working on "Bigger Than Kindle" Project - Report. - X-bit Labs

Although Amazon, the world’s largest online store operator, currently only sells e-book readers and media tablets, it is widely believed that the company has a lot more hardware products in development. Sometimes, even evidences regarding those products emerge. Apparently, at an invitation-only event late last year the company discussed a product that it proclaimed to be “even bigger than Kindle”.

The first rumours about Amazon’s smartphone emerged in September, 2011, over two years ago. However, smartphone is not the only product that is believed to be in development at Amazon. Last year it was reported that Amazon had the so-called Alphabet Projects program, under which it is developing projects A (smartphone), B (set-top-box), C (audio-streaming device) and D (high-end smartphone with S3D display). Moreover, the company’s mysterious Lab 126, which many think is responsible for various innovations at Amazon, may be working on yet unknown products under code-names like E, F, G or something else.

Very late last year Amazon organized an event, presumably for its employees only, where is discussed a product called “V1″ that was described as a thing “even bigger than Kindle”.

“We are working on a new revolutionary V1 product that will allow us to deliver Digital Media to our customers in new ways and disrupt the current marketplace. We believe this new product will be even bigger than Kindle! “Amazon wrote in the invitation to the exclusive event, which was republished by Boston.com earlier this week.

The company provided no details regarding the product that was to be demonstrated, but in case “V1″ stands for “version one”, it is hardly a smartphone after two years in development.

Amazon is one of the world’s largest seller of music CDs, video Blu-ray/DVD discs, paper books, packaged games and other types of content on physical media. Given the fact that all of the aforementioned businesses are either stagnating or deteriorating, the company needs to sell more digital content to offset the declines. In order to sell more digital media, Amazon may need specially-designed devices, which it is developing. Almost any hardware that helps Amazon to increase sales of content will be good for the company.

Perhaps, it is not that important what V1 actually is. It looks like its key feature is delivering digital media in a brand-new way, which itself could be a revolution …

Amazon did not comment on the news-story.
