Amazon Kindle Fire New Lineup to compete with iPad's Retina Display - PC-Tablet

The current line of Kindle Fires will be revamped in time for the coming holiday season. The three-version lineup will remain the same in name, but there will be several improvements under the hood. Amazon is likely trying to capture some of the Nook market while it remains in hardware limbo.

The basic 7 “model is getting a major graphical upgrade – from 1024 X 600 to 1280 X 800. That level of pixel density on a 7 “screen is technically HD. Meanwhile, the actual Kindle Fire HD model will be growing its pixel count to 1920 X 1200. The 8.9 “HD Model will have a resolution of 2560 X 1600, which exceeds the iPad’s retina display in both pixel density and count.

The next generation of Kindle Fires will also be lighter and look more squared off and chiseled than its previous versions. The power and volume buttons will also reportedly be moved to the back of the device. Amazon is likely to keep the current pricing options intact, despite these upgrades, and it seems likely that they are continuing to target iPad’s market share by introducing similar features at a lower cost.

No word yet on whether there will be any kind of OS upgrade, but it seems unlikely. Though Android fans have expressed dissatisfaction with the Kindle Fire’s stripped-down, relatively slow, and Amazon-locked system, the Kindle Fire is still the second most popular tablet on the market. Only the iPad sells more units.

The news of the display improvement comes as a bit of a surprise considering the Kindle Fire’s television advertisements, which seem to imply that there is no noticeable difference between the two tablets as they currently are. However, it’s obvious from the ever-increasing pixel density on nearly every tablet on the market that resolution is one of the specs that companies believe inform customer purchasing decisions.

Amazon has a long history of producing quality e-Book readers and has a loyal fanbase. As a pioneer in online book selling, they have consistently produced tablets that focus on buying e-books from their store. Nonetheless, the Kindle Fires have been among Amazon’s top best sellers for years now, and will probably continue to be.

The new Kindle Fires will be available ahead of the holiday season, likely in mid-fall.
