Kindle Paperwhite is claimed to be the world’s most advanced e-reader, offering an “uncompromised reading experience”.
The £ 106 device has higher contrast and a faster processor than previous models, as well as a built-in light and the latest touch technology.
It also boasts a new Vocabulary Builder feature, which combines words looked up in the dictionary into a list.
The list of words is then put into quizzes and flashcards for readers, helping to build their language skills.
Sherman Griffin, director of marketing for Amazon Kindle, said: “We are really excited to announce the new Kindle.
“With the new Kindle Paperwhite we really focused on making it the best reading experience for customers and building on the great Paperwhite device that we launched last year.
“With the new Kindle we have incorporated some great new hardware improvements, some great software improvements, all focused with the reader in mind.
“We have a faster processor, 25% faster page turns, faster opening of books.
“We also have new lighting. It is brighter so you have greater contrasts, which makes for a really wonderful reading experience.”
Kindle Paperwhite, which was announced by Amazon in Luxembourg on September 3, has been demonstrated at the Berlin IFA tech show.
The device features Kindle’s new Page Flip, which allows readers to skim through pages, chapters or skip to the end of the book without losing their place.
Smart Lookup integrates a full dictionary along with Wikipedia, giving access to definitions and information.
Amazon say Paperwhite, which weighs 206g, reads like real paper, even in direct sunlight, and has a battery lasting for up to eight weeks.
Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, added: “Kindle is the best-selling e-reader family in the world for six years running.
“No one is investing on behalf of readers or pushing the boundaries of hardware, software and content for readers like this team.”
