Amazon announced today that the Kindle Paperwhite will be getting an update that adds integration with Goodreads, as well as support for Kindle FreeTime, the company’s reading encouragement software for the Kindle that allows parents to pick out books for their kids, and reward them for reading.
The Goodreads functionality will allow users to update their shelves from their Kindle Fire, much like they could on one of Goodreads’s mobile apps, as well as make it easy to import books from a user’s Kindle collection into their Goodreads account.
FreeTime gives parents a way to select books for their kids to read on the Kindle, and reward them with digital badges for reaching milestones like reading 1000 pages.
When the company launched the newest version of the Paperwhite in late September, it said that these two new features would be “coming soon.” Well, here they are. The update brings the Paperwhite’s functionality in line with functionality that has already been extended to Amazon’s Kindle Fire line of tablets.
Paperwhite users will get the update over the air over the course of this week, and can also go download it manually from Amazon here.
