Amazon Publishing has added Hugh Howey’s Silo Saga to its Kindle Worlds platform, designed for the commercial sale of fan fiction.
The Howey series has been an e-book hit, with its first volume, Wool, also a UK print chart success from Century. Howey’s editor at Random House, Century editorial director Jack Fogg, said: “Hugh has always been a massive advocate of fan fiction, encouraging others to write stories set within the world of the Silos, and this will allow many others to play around in the amazing world he created. I ¹ m looking forward to the results. “
Kindle Worlds has also secured licenses on Barry Eisler ¹ s John Rain novels, Blake Crouch ¹ s Wayward Pines series, and the Foreworld Saga, written by Neal Stephenson and other writers and published by Amazon’s own 47North imprint. It has also struck a deal with comics publisher Valiant, allowing fans to write and market stories about characters such as Bloodshot, XO, Manowar, Archer & Armstrong, Harbinger and Shadowman.
Philip Partrick, director, business development and publisher of Kindle Worlds said: “Since announcing Kindle Worlds just weeks ago, we’ve been energised by the interest and enthusiasm for this new programme.”
Amazon plans to launch its Kindle Worlds store later this month with more than 50 commissioned works, opening the self-service submission platform at the same time.
It will pay royalties to both the authors and the rights holders of the world, with the author receiving 35% of net revenue for works over 10,000 words. For works between 5,000 words and 10,000 words, usually priced under $ 1, Amazon will pay the royalties for the world ¹ s rights holder and pay authors a digital royalty of 20%.
Amazon Publishing has already signed licenses in Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars and Vampire Diaries, following a deal with Warner Bros Television Group’s Alloy Entertainment.
