A & T reinstates QB Lewis Kindle - Greensboro News & Record

GREENSBORO – NC A & T quarterback Lewis Kindle has been reinstated to the football team by athletics director Earl Hilton but will be required to sit out the season opener at Appalachian State at 6 pm Sept. 7.

Kindle, who was charged with driving while impaired by campus police on July 5 after blood-alcohol tests measured him three times above the North Carolina limit, also will serve as a speaker for area middle school students about the importance of good decision-making, according to A & T.

The charges against Kindle, considered a first-time offender, have been resolved through a student judicial committee and will result in him performing community service. Kindle had a court date scheduled for Aug. 26.

Kindle’s appearances before students are a separate requirement by the athletics department.

Kindle practiced Monday for the first time. Kindle would be eligible to play in A & T’s home opener, at 6 pm Sept. 14 against Elon.

Kindle was suspended from all football-related team activities in July after a traffic stop that resulted in charges of driving while impaired and failure to burn headlights from sunset to sunrise.

Kindle was pulled over early July 5, according to a report from the A & T Department of Police and Public Safety. Kindle submitted to two breath tests at the scene, with the first test resulting in a 0.23 and the second at 0.24, according to the report. The legal limit in North Carolina is 0.08.

Kindle later provided a third breath sample for a different blood-alcohol measuring device at the Guilford County Jail, which resulted in a reading of 0.25, according to the report.

Kindle was stopped at 3:06 am July 5 by a campus police officer while driving on East Lindsay Street and attempting to make a left turn onto Sullivan Street.

A & T announced in July that it had suspended Kindle from all football-related activities pending the resolution of the two criminal charges. Kindle’s court date was scheduled for Aug. 26.

Kindle threw for 1,341 yards, three touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 10 games last season for the Aggies. He missed the first two games of the 2012 season after being suspended for violating team rules.
