Amazon on Thursday announced that it has officially opened up its Kindle Store in Mexico. The store is home to 2 million eBooks, 70,000 of which are in Spanish, and Amazon will sell the titles in Mexican Pesos.

The news is particularly noteworthy because of a lack of brick and mortar bookstores in a majority of Mexico, Amazon’s director of Kindle content Pedro Huerta explained. Without a bookstore or a library nearby, the Kindle could be an important learning tool – particularly for children. So, with a viable Internet connection, the population can get online and reading. Amazon will also sell the Kindle and the Kindle Paperwhite through its store, for MXN $ 1,399 ($ ??105) and MXN $ 2,399 ($ ??180).

Amazon’s Kindle Store for Mexico is also home to books by famous Mexican authors, and will sell more than 1,000 titles for less than MXN $ 9 ($ 0.68)
