Dots, the extremely addictive game that was a big hit among iOS users earlier this year, is now available in the Google Play store and on Amazon.

Since Dots launched in the beginning of May, it has been downloaded more than 5 million times and is approaching 1 billion games played, according to Paul Murphy, SVP of products at Betaworks, which developed the game. Dots users now play 5 million to 10 million games each day.
Murphy told Mashable that the Betaworks team took extra time developing the Android version of the app in order to ensure “continuous integration” so that “Android users never lag behind iPhone users in terms of new features and game modes. “
The popularity of Dots is all the more striking given that Betaworks never really intended to make a game in the first place. Patrick Moberg, a hacker-in-residence at Betaworks, was experimenting with various user interaction designs while working on a Betaworks short story tool called Tapestry and suddenly found himself turning those design elements into a game. “I sort of forgot the words,” Moberg told Mashable in an earlier interview.
For those who haven’t played, Dots is a deceptively simple game that asks users to connect the dots. Users can also make in-app purchases or put points earned towards additional options like shrinking dots, freezing time or eliminating all dots of a certain color. As part of the new release, Dots also introduced an additional game mode called “Moves,” which does away with the time limit and instead lets users make 30 moves.
