Q. I noticed that Amazon dropped the price of its Amazon Kindle Fire HD to $ 159. Does that mean it’s about to introduce a new edition? – Red, Waco, Texas.

Red, you are very tech savvy. For starters, yes, Amazon has cut the starting price of its 7-inch Kindle Fire HD to $ 159, which is $ 40 off the regular price. When a company introduces a price drop like that, it’s for one of two reasons:

1. The product isn’t selling well so the company needs to attract more customers with a lower price.

2. The company is about to launch a new edition of the product so it wants to move remaining inventory of the current version before the launch.

In this case, although Amazon has a Netflix-like aversion to releasing sales ( viewing) numbers, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that the Kindle Fire HD is selling quite well. So I think we can assume a new Kindle Fire HD is coming soon.

Ubergizmo notes that Amazon has introduced new Kindle products in the early fall so the timing may be right. And CNET writes that the Boy Genius Report is flush with details on the new Kindle Fire HD, including word that it will feature a 1,920 x1280 pixel display, a front-facing camera and a more powerful processor.

If all of that is true, it would certainly make the Kindle Fire HD a potent competitor to the iPad and any other tablet on the scene.

So, stay tuned. But until then, enjoy the lower price on the current Kindle Fire HD.
