Tesco set to rival Apple iPad and Amazon Kindle with Christmas tablet launch

Tesco is set to launch its own tablet, which it plans to sell with the help of its expanding range of digital services.

A Sunday Times report says that the country’s largest supermarket chain will have the new tablet on its shelves in time for Christmas. No specifications for the device have yet been released, although the paper’s sources suggest it could come pre-loaded with books, films and music.

Earlier this year, we at ITProPortal predicted that Tesco would enter the tablet market to compete against the likes of Apple’s iPad and Amazon’s Kindle in selling hardware combined with digital services.

Tesco’s expanding digital content include the Blinkbox video streaming and download service, Blinkbox Music, and the Tesco eBook store, which is currently under development.

Tesco rival Asda, which is owned by Walmart, already has its own Arnova range of tablets. Walmart acquired the Vudu video-on-demand service in 2010, while Tesco acquired Blinkbox in 2011.

Tesco’s Blinkbox service is taking on the likes of Netflix and Lovefilm in the UK video-on-demand market. According to statistics from research firm eMarketer, 40 million Britons will watch video content online at least once a month by 2017.
